Generators

Generators are sized in watts. Running watts are the continuous supply; starting watts are a brief surge for motors and compressors. Add the running watts of everything you will use together, then add the largest single starting surge. Inverter models produce cleaner power for electronics and are typically quieter; open-frame models usually cost less per watt.

Fuel matters as much as watts. Gasoline is easy to find until it isn't; propane stores well; natural gas can mean no refuelling if the line stays up. Dual- and tri-fuel units give options, usually at reduced watts on the alternative fuels. Safety is non-negotiable: carbon monoxide kills, so a generator runs outdoors and away from openings.
